The Hospital General of Reference D'uvira (French: Hôpital Général de Référence d'Uvira), also known as General Referral Hospital of Uvira or Uvira General Reference Hospital, is a healthcare facility located in Uvira, the capital of the Uvira Territory in the South Kivu Province of the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It serves as a general hospital, providing medical services to the local population. The hospital offers a wide range of medical specialties and advanced healthcare services, including primary, secondary, and some tertiary care, such as emergency care, surgical procedures, maternal and child health services, and treatment for various medical conditions.[1][2][3]

With funding from the German government through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Medeor Action, the Women's Association for the Promotion and Endogenous Development (AFPDE) launched the construction of morgues at the hospital and the Hôpital Général de Référence de Ruzizi in Sange on March 13, 2023.[4]

Location

The Hospital General of Reference D'uvira is situated in the Uvira Territory within the urban-rural health zone of Uvira. Most notably, it is located in the Bavira Chiefdom, which is part of the Kakungwe District. The hospital is positioned along the main road that connects the city of Bukavu to the administrative center of Fizi Territory. Geographically, it is bordered to the east by Lake Tanganyika, to the west by the Mitumba Mountains, to the north by the commercial Mulongwe district, and to the south by the Kimanga and Songo districts. The hospital is approximately 128 km away from the city of Bukavu and 28 km from Bujumbura.[5]

History

The hospital was constructed in 1952 through the initiative of the Indigenous Welfare Fund (Fonds du Bien-être Indigène; FBI). The construction project was overseen by Mr. Khulpe, a Belgian construction director. Initially, the hospital was established as a surgical medical center under the leadership of the first doctor, Louis Rousseau. Assisting him were two religious sisters, nurses, and twenty-three other lay nursing assistants. The institution provided healthcare services throughout Uvira Territory, where it was located and its environs.[6]

In 1980, the hospital was officially recognized as a general reference hospital within the rural health zone of Uvira. Since then, it has been crucial in delivering comprehensive medical care to the region. Presently, the hospital is under the direction of Dr. Bahati Bagale Yves, a Congolese doctor specializing in surgery.[6]
