Matches is a global luxury e-commerce platform, shipping to over 200 countries. Matches offers ready-to-wear, shoes, bags and accessories for womenswear, menswear and lifestyle products. The business operates online and via three stores in London, England. Matches has been owned by Frasers Group since December 2023.[1]
History
Tom Chapman and Ruth Chapman opened the first store in Wimbledon Village in 1987, and opened an online store in 2007.[2] In 2012, the Chapmans sold a £20,000,000 stake to venture capital firms to help build its online presence.[3] In 2017, the founders sold the business to private equity firm Apax for an estimated £400 million.[4]
Ajay Kavan stepped down as CEO of Matches Fashion in March 2021.[5] In September 2021, Paolo de Cesare became CEO of Matches Fashion.[6]
On 12 July 2022, Matches confirmed Nick Beighton as its new CEO.[7] Following this Matches received £60m from Apax.[8] to power it's turnaround.
On 3 November 2022, Matches rebranded from Matchesfashion to Matches.[9]
On 13 April 2023, at Matches 5 Carlos Place, London – the retailer’s townhouse which doubles as a physical store and events space – ‘The World of Loewe’ puts the anthurium flower at its centre with an immersive installation.[10]
On 17 Jul 2023, Matches held a series of private shopping events[11] showcasing its exclusive vacation capsules, with items that run the gamut from summer evening gowns from Giambattista Valli and beach cover-ups from Missoni to crochet Gucci accessories.
On 9 August 2023, Matches partnered with Sellier Knightsbridge to sell vintage bags.[12]
On 17 September 2023, Vogue100 hosted a breakfast At Matches’ Townhouse During London Fashion Week.[13]
In 2023 Matches saw a revenue drop, but said it has grown its customer base in its UK and US markets and has "improved underlying profitability."[14]
In 2023 Matches collaborated with Aston Martin, the British maker of luxury sports cars.[15]
In 2023 Frasers Group acquired Matches Fashion for £52 million from private equity firm Apax Partners.[1][16]
Distribution
There is one "logistic centre" in the UK. Matches also maintains studios to produce pictures of the merchandise with photographers in the UK.
