FIFA is the international governing body of football. From its headquarters in Zürich, Switzerland, FIFA is responsible for the organization and governance of football's major international tournaments, most notably the FIFA World Cup, held since 1930.

In total, FIFA recognises 208 national federations and their associated men's national teams as well as 129 women's national teams. Curiously, FIFA has more member states than the United Nations, as FIFA recognises several non-sovereign entities as distinct nations, most notably the four Home Nations within the United Kingdom. The FIFA World Rankings are updated monthly and rank each team based on their performance in international competitions, qualifiers, and friendly matches. There is also a world ranking for women's football, updated four times a year.

The 46 member Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is the governing body of football in Asia, excluding Cyprus and Israel but including Australia. It was founded in 1954 in Manila, Philippines, and is one of FIFA's six Continental Confederations. With its main headquarters now located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the confederation is split into four regions to better administrate the continent.

The AFC organises the Asian Cup, the Asian World Cup Qualifying Tournament and the AFC Challenge Cup as well as overseeing the Asian Olympics Qualifying Tournament. In addition, the confederation also runs three levels of annual international club competitions. The most prestigious (and oldest of the current AFC club competitions) is the AFC Champions League tournament.

The 53 member Confederation of African Football (CAF) represents international football in Africa, and organises the African Cup of Nations, African Nations Championship CAF Confederation Cup and the African Champions League. The confederation was founded in 1957, and received a guaranteed berth in the World Cup for the first time in 1970.

In addition to organising over fifteen international club and national team tournaments, the CAF annually presents the African Footballer of the Year award. Due to their geographic location, ten CAF nations also participate in the Arab Nations Cup organised by UAFA.

CONCACAF (the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) is the continent-wide governing body for football in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Three South American entities, the independent nations of Guyana and Suriname, and the French department of French Guiana, are also members.

CONCACAF was founded in 1961, with the fusion of the CCCF and NAFC, and is one of the six continental confederations affiliated with FIFA. Its primary administrative functions are to organize competitions for national teams and clubs, and to conduct World Cup qualifying tournaments. It also arranges international competitions, with the most prestigious being the CONCACAF Gold Cup and CONCACAF Champions League.

CONMEBOL or CSF (Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol) is the governing body of football in most of South America. Conmebol is part of FIFA and is in charge of all professional football activities in its member countries. The permanent headquarters are located in Luque, Paraguay (near Asunción).

The confederation was created on July 9, 1916 with Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Chile becoming the founder nations and has since expanded to have ten member nations. Among the tournaments conducted by Conmebol are the Copa Libertadores de América and the Copa Sudamericana, both for club teams, and Copa América for men's national teams. The Sudamericano Femenino is the international competition for women.

The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) is one of the six "continental" confederations of international football. It promotes the game in Oceania and allows the member nations to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

Of the six confederations, the OFC is by far the smallest and weakest, made up of small and often impoverished island nations, in many of which football is not the most popular sport. Consequently, it has little influence in the wider football world, either in terms of international competition or as a source of players for high-profile club competitions. In 2006, the OFC's largest and most successful nation, Australia, transferred to the Asian Football Confederation, leaving New Zealand as the most prominent federation within the OFC.

The European Association Football Union, almost always referred to by the acronym of the underlying French term UEFA, is the administrative and controlling body for European football. It represents the national football associations of Europe, runs Europe-wide national and club competitions, and controls the prize money, regulations and media rights to those competitions.

UEFA is one of the biggest of six continental confederations of FIFA. Of all the confederations, it is by far the strongest in terms of wealth and influence over the global game. Virtually all of the world's top players play in European leagues in part due to the salaries available from the world's wealthiest football clubs.

The Football Association (The FA) is the governing body of football in England and the Crown dependencies of Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man. The FA governs all professional football clubs in England. It is a member of UEFA and FIFA, and holds a permanent seat on the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

The association was founded in 1863 with a view to creating a governing body for the sport and to decide on which variety of rules to use. The original Laws of the Game were drawn up and first used in a game played at Mortlake on 19 December 1863 between Barnes and Richmond.

All of England's professional football clubs are members of the Football Association. The FA is also responsible for the appointment of the management of the England men's and women's national teams and the organization of the FA Cup.

The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) is the official governing body of the sport of soccer in the United States. Founded in 1913, it is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. It is a member of FIFA, and is responsible for governing amateur and professional soccer, including the men's, women's, and Paralympic national teams. The USSF is also responsible for sanctioning referees and soccer tournaments for most soccer leagues in the United States.

The federation oversees the leagues of Major League Soccer and the United Soccer Leagues as well as the Women's Premier Soccer League and W-League. The federations major cup competition is the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup which is open to all affiliated teams and has been contested since 1914.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (or Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF) in Portuguese) is the governing body of football in Brazil, and was founded on August 20, 1914 as the Confederação Brasileira de Desportos (CBD), meaning Brazilian Sports Confederation.

Part of CONMEBOL, it organizes the Brazilian national competitions of the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa do Brasil. The state federations, which organizes the state championships, are subordinated to CBF. The organization also administrates the Brazil national football team and the Brazil women's national football team. It is based in Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro state.

The Football Association of Indonesia or PSSI (Indonesian: Persatuan Sepak bola Seluruh Indonesia) is the governing body of football in Indonesia. It was founded on April 19, 1930 and joined FIFA in 1952 and the Asian Football Confederation in 1954.

The PSSI is responsible for the Indonesia national football team which first entered the World Cup in 1938 under the name of the Dutch East Indies before independence led to the newly named Indonesia competing in the qualifying round of the 1958 competition. Due to internal and external political problems, the team did not compete internationally again until 1974.

The association also governs seven domestic leagues, the highest of which is the men's "Liga Djarum Indonesia", including one youth league and one women's league

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is the amateur organisation which manages the game of football in India. It administers the running of the national team and also controls the I-League, India's premier domestic club competition, in addition to various other competitions.

The Indian Football Association was founded in West Bengal in 1893 by the English and was affiliated with the FA. Owing to this affiliation it was perceived as the de facto association for the entire sub-continent but complaints from other regions of India about the neutrality of the association eventually led to break away organisations being formed.

The AIFF was founded in 1937 to represent the entire country and gained FIFA affiliation in 1948 following India's independence the previous year. It was also one of the founder members of the Asian Football Confederation when it was created in 1954.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) is the governing body for the sport of Association football in Australia. Before 1 January 2005, it was known as the Australian Soccer Association (ASA), which succeeded Soccer Australia in this role in 2003.

The association has a chequered past, being dissolved twice and refused re-entry into FIFA in 1961 until outstanding fines were paid, but following the Crawford Report and the change of name to the FFA; the popularity and financial health of the sport in Australia improved.

Among other duties, the FFA oversees Australia's national football teams (including the Socceroos (men), the Matildas (women), and various youth teams) and the national club competition, the A-League.

The Scottish Football Association (also known as the SFA and The Scottish FA) is the governing body of football in Scotland and has the ultimate responsibility for the control and development of football in Scotland. Members of the SFA include clubs in Scotland, affiliated national associations as well as local associations. It was formed in 1873, making it the second oldest national football association in the world.

The Scottish Football Association sits on the International Football Association Board which is responsible for the laws of the game. The SFA is also a member of FIFA and founder member of UEFA. It is based at Hampden Park in Glasgow. In addition, the Scottish Football Museum is located there.

The Scottish Football Association is responsible for the operation of the Scotland national football team, the annual Scottish Cup and several other duties important to the functioning of the game in Scotland.

The German Football Federation (German: Deutscher Fußball-Bund or DFB) is the governing body of association football in Germany. The founding member of both FIFA and UEFA organises the German football leagues, including the national league, the Bundesliga and the men's and women's national teams. The DFB is based in Frankfurt and is divided into five regional federations with 21 regional organizations.

Today, about 26,000 clubs are members, fielding 170,000 teams with over 2 million active players and totalling over 6 million members, the largest membership of any single sports federation in the world. DFB has 870,000 female members and 8600 female teams.

Portal:Association football/Selected association/16 The Argentine Football Association (AFA) (Spanish: Asociación del Fútbol Argentino) is the governing body of football in Argentina. It organises the Argentine football league and the Argentina national football team. It is based in Buenos Aires. It also organizes the amateur leagues for women, children, youth, Futsal, and other local leagues, as well as the national women's team.

Around 400 registered football clubs play in the Argentine Football Association league system which is divided into a pyramid of eight leagues, divided at the third tier between the Greater Buenos Aires conurbation and the rest of the country (Interior). Below this level there are a further 249 regional leagues which are affiliated with AFA and compete for the right to enter the league system at the lowest tier.

The Primera División is the highest level of club football in Argentina. it is divided into the Apertura and Clausura championships consisting of two leagues of 19 games each per season. At the end of each season the most successful teams qualify to play in the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana and the least successful are relegated to the second tier; Primera B Nacional which is the only other league which is organised at national level.
