The Berlin Open officially known as the West Berlin Open[1][lower-alpha 1] was a men's tennis tournament founded in 1896 as a combined event (women included) called the Championships of Berlin until 1914,[2] following World War I the event was known as the Berlin Championships.[3][4] The event was first played at the Lawn-Tennis-Turnier-Club until 1906.[5][3] In 1907 it moved to Grunewald, and a new venue the Rot-Weiss Tennis Club.[3] Following World War II the tournament was branded as the West Berlin International Championships.[3] It then ran annually until 1973 as a combined event when the women's tournament was discontinued.[3] The men's event carried on until 1983 when it was last held in West Berlin, West Germany.[3] The event was part of the Grand Prix circuit and was played on outdoor clay courts.[3]

Notes

  1. West Berlin was a political enclave which comprised the western part of Berlin from 1948 until 1990, during the Cold War. Although West Berlin was de jure not part of West Germany it was in fact within East Germany, lacked any sovereignty, and it was under military occupation until German reunification in 1990.
