A winter storm in late February 2022 impacted much of the Southwestern, Southern, Northeastern and Midwestern United States, producing high snow, ice, and sleet accumulations. The winter storm, unofficially named Winter Storm Oaklee by The Weather Channel,[1] prompted the National Weather Service to issue numerous winter weather watches and warnings across much of the country. First impacting California and Arizona on February 23, the low-pressure area associated with the winter storm then traversed across the Southern, Midwestern, and Northeastern parts of the country, setting numerous low temperature records and high snowfall accumulations from Texas to Maine.[2] More than 1,000 flights were cancelled, and over 100,000 power outages occurred. The winter storm caused 7 fatalities, all due to car accidents.
Meteorological synopsis
A shortwave trough near the Oregon–California border, weakening and being absorbed into a western main trough, moved ashore from the Pacific Ocean into southern California before ejecting east towards the Four Corners region on February 23.[3][4] That trough moved along an intensifying subtropical jet stream as moisture came from the Pacific Ocean.[3][4] The moist advection then overran a Arctic cold front, which had produced record-low temperatures across the northern portions of the country.[3] This resulted in widespread freezing rain, sleet, and ice to the Southern and Midwestern parts of the United States as a low-pressure area developed near Tennessee.[3] As the surface low trekked northward across eastern Ohio, the southwesterly flow associated with the trough lifted as the low moved across the Ohio valley into the Northeast.[3] The subtropical jet stream intensified on February 24, with a strong high pressure located across Quebec and Ontario forcing cold air to expand across the Northeast and the Appalachian Mountains, and anomalous moisture across the Northeastern United States led to heavy snowfall and ice accretion the following day.[3] High moisture amounts and anomalies also caused heavy snowfall and ice accumulations across the Northeastern United States the next day.[3] A deep dendritic growth zone, combined with a strong frontogenesis, yielded conditions for high snow ratios and snowfall rates of more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) per hour.[5] The surface low then moved offshore onto the Atlantic Ocean on February 26.[5]
Preparations
The National Weather Service issued ice storm and winter storm watches and warnings across the Northeastern and Midwestern United States.[6]
