For the Summer Olympics, there have been nine Olympic sports that have been discontinued from the program.

For the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, long-discontinued sports in golf (previously competed in 1904) and rugby union (1924) were reinstated as Olympic sports, though rugby union was as rugby sevens (having previously been 15-a-side).

For the 2028 Summer Olympics, cricket (only appearance in 1900) and lacrosse (last competed in 1908) will be reinstated as Olympic sports, though cricket will be as Twenty20 (it was a two-day match in 1900).

Two basque pelota, one croquet, one jeu de paume, five polo, one racquets, five rugby union (fifteen-a-side), five tug of war, and one water motorsports venues have been used for the Summer Olympics.
