Oppenheimer is a 2023 epic biographical thriller film written, directed, and co-produced by Christopher Nolan. Based on the 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, it predominately chronicles the career of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The film stars Cillian Murphy as the titular character and follows him through his academic studies, his direction of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Second World War—which produced the first nuclear weapons, and his 1954 security hearing that resulted in his political fall from grace. Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr. and Florence Pugh also star in the film; the ensemble supporting cast features Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh.
The film premiered at Le Grand Rex in Paris on July 11, 2023, and was theatrically released in the United States and the United Kingdom on July 11 via Universal Pictures. Greatly exceeding box office expectations, Oppenheimer grossed over $954 million worldwide against a production budget of $100 million, becoming the third-highest-grossing film of 2023, the highest-grossing biographical film, the highest-grossing World War II-related film, and the second-highest-grossing R-rated film. Rotten Tomatoes, a review aggregator, surveyed 495 reviews of the film and judged 93% to be positive; it is the best-reviewed film of 2023 on the aggregator.[1]
Met with widespread critical acclaim, Oppenheimer garnered awards and nominations from a variety of categories, with particular praise towards its directing, screenplay, cast performances, cinematography, editing, musical score, and visual effects. The film received eight nominations at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, winning a leading five: Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director (Nolan), Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama (Murphy), Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture (Downey) and Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson). It is the first film since Gandhi (1982), and the tenth film overall, to win five Golden Globes.[2] The National Board of Review and the American Film Institute named Oppenheimer one of the top-ten films of 2023. The film received thirteen nominations at the 29th Critics' Choice Awards and the 28th Satellite Awards; it won a special achievement award for Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture during the latter ceremony.
