This is a listing of people who were involved in the formation and growth of Maratha Empire. The Maratha Empire or the Maratha Confederacy was an Indian power that existed from 1647 to 1818. At its peak, the empire covered a territory of over 2.8 million km². The Marathas are credited to a large extent for ending the Mughal rule in India.[1][2][3]

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj The historical founder of the Maratha empire and the first Chhatrapati. Chhatrapati Sambhaji Sambhaji was first crown prince and second ruler of the Maratha empire. He was the eldest son of Chatrapati Shivaji and his first wife Maharani Saibai. He was successor of the realm after his father's death and ruled it for nine years. Sambhaji was a genius military commander as he started his campaigns against Mughals from very young age of 15 years old. He is credited for defending Maratha Empire from Overwhelmingly Strong Mughal Empire as well as neighbouring powers such as Portuguese in Goa, Siddhis of Janjira and Chikkadevaraya of Mysore. Maharani Yesubai She was the wife of Chhatrapati Sambhaji & Eldest daughter in law of Chhatrapati Shivaji after her husband was executed, she handled administration for 1 month and made Rajaram Maharaj Chhatrapati she was in prison for a brief period of 30 years from 1689 to 1719. Royal Era
Baji Rao I Baji Rao I was appointed Peshwa by Shahu. Bajirao is credited with expanding the Maratha Empire tenfold from 3% to 30% of the modern Indian landscape during 1720–1740. He fought over 41 major battles before his death in April 1740 and is reputed to have never lost one. Royal era

Yashwantrao Holkar Yashwantrao Holkar, Maharaja of Indore. He is known for the Siege of Bharatpur (1805) where he defeated the outnumbered British Army. After his attempts to unite other Indian rulers against the British failed he entered a treaty with the British. Baji Prabhu Deshpande Baji Prabhu Deshpande (c. 1615-1660) was a commander of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha empire. In the Battle of Pavan Khind , Baji Prabhu, his brother Phulaji and the remaining Bandal Sena of about 300 men blocked the pass and fought against 10000 Bijapuri soldiers in the Ghodkhind Pass for more than 18 hours. Baji Prabhu, even though grievously injured, continued fighting, inspiring his men to fight on until Shivaji Maharaj's safe journey to Vishalgadh was signaled by the firing of three cannon volleys.
