The New Pact on Migration and Asylum is a set of new rules in the European Union designed for members to more evenly share the cost and efforts of hosting migrants and to place limits on the numbers of migrants entering.[1][2]

The deal was announced on 20 December 2023, after all-night talks between representatives of the European Parliament and EU governments. The new agreement is planned to take effect in 2024.[1]

A group of human rights organizations including Oxfam, Caritas, Amnesty International, and Save the Children have criticised the deal in an open letter stating that it would create a “cruel system”.[3]
