On 15 December 2021, a Gulfstream G-IVSP, crashed at Las Américas International Airport, Punta Caucedo, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, killing all nine people on board, including Puerto Rican music producer Flow La Movie.[1][2]
Accident
On December 15, 2021, a Gulfstream IV registered as HI1050, departed Santo Domingo's La Isabella International Airport, en route to Orlando, Florida, before diverting to Las Americas International airport where the aircraft crashed upon an attempted landing. Nine casualties were reported and no survivors.[3]
Investigation
According to preliminary investigation results shared by Dominican Comisión Investigadora de Accidentes de Aviación (CIAA) on January 18, 2022, the aircraft arrived at Las Américas International Airport, Punta Caucedo, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, at 12:35 local time following a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico on the same day of the accident. The aircraft was suddenly moved to a hangar of Helidosa Aviation Group for maintenance. The company worked to the aircraft for three hours, replacing a ground spoiler actuator on the aircraft's right wing. Soon, the plane was moved back to the apron for a flight to Orlando International Airport, Orlando, Florida. According to footage taken from the CCTV at the airport, the pilots made a check of the flights control. The spoilers on both wings extended, but only those on the left wing retracted again. The aircraft was then seen taxiing for departure with the three spoilers on the right wing still extended.[3]
After take-off, the crew immediately experienced a flight control problem. Soon after the control issue, the pilots declared an emergency and requested the vectors to return to the airport. As the situation advanced, the pilots decided to deviate back to Las Américas International Airport, where they were cleared to land on runway 35. On the final approach to the airport, the aircraft hit some trees and subsequently the ground at about 200 meters on the right side of the runway. The flight lasted a total of almost 16 minutes.[3]
The investigation on the accident is still ongoing and no final report is released.
