Aleksi Perälä (born 1976)[1] is a Finnish electronic music composer and producer.[2][3][4][5][6] He has made music since 1988,[3] and performed it live since 1996. His music was first released on Rephlex in 1999 and is now released mostly on his own label, AP Musik.

Early life and education

In 2005, he obtained a music technology degree from the College of Salpaus.[2]

Musical career and release style

Perälä has an extensive musical career with over 100 album releases[7] spanning various electronic music genres. He has been known to release his music on unconventional formats, including:

  • Audio DVD ("Colundi Sequence Level 1 and 2")
  • Surround sound DVD ("Colundi Sequence Level 17.5")
  • USB card ("Colundi Sequence Level 4")
  • Cassette ("Colundi Sequence Level 6 and 17.3")
  • Minidisc ("Colundi Sequence Level 7 and 17.4")
  • Vinyl postcard ("Colundi Sequence Level 17.1")
  • Wire recording ("Colundi Sequence Level 8")
  • A piece of land, attempted through crowdfunding ("Colundi Sequence Level 9")

In 2011, Perälä founded AP Musik, a sublabel of Rephlex. It was during this period that he began incorporating colundi frequencies into his music, releasing it through his label. Colundi is a term referring to 128 sound frequencies discovered and curated by Rephlex co-founder Grant Wilson-Claridge.[8][9][10] Perälä's prolific creative output has been a direct result of his experimentation with this unique system.[11][7]

In 2021, Perälä received a two-year grant from the Kone Foundation,[12] leading to a substantial volume of full-length albums released on a frequent bi-weekly or weekly basis.[7] The grant's research focuses on additive synthesis while exploring various elements of world music. His work primarily involves sampling objects from his surroundings and replacing their harmonic overtones with colundi frequencies.[13][7]

Aleksi's prolific output has led him to forgo conventional track titles in favour of using ISRC codes, a practical approach to managing the vast number of tracks he produces.[3]

He has produced remixes for Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers which were released on Alleviated Records.[14]

Personal life

Perälä has lived in the United Kingdom for ten years. He is married to a Canadian woman.[3]
