Biography
Dzięga was born in 1952 in Radzyń Podlaski. He completed his general education in 1971 and afterwards attended the seminary in Siedlce, where he was ordained a priest in 1977 by Jan Mazur.[1] He attended the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin afterwards, where he graduated with a JCL in 1985 and a PhD in canon law in 1988. He later attained habilitation in 1995 and was made a professor of the university in 1998.[2]
Between 1986 and 1989, Dzięga served as notary of the ecclesiastical court of the Diocese of Siedlce;[3] he also served as vice-postulator for the Pratulin Martyrs.[4] Between 1993 and 2002, he was judicial vicar for the Diocese of Drohiczyn.[5] He was appointed dean of the Faculty of Law at the Catholic University of Lublin in 1996.[2]
Dzięga was appointed Bishop of Sandomierz on 7 October 2002 by John Paul II;[6] he was consecrated on 24 November by Józef Kowalczyk. He was later appointed as Archbishop of Szczecin-Kamień by Benedict XVI on 21 February 2009 and installed on 4 April.[7]
In 2014, Dzięga was given an honorary doctorate from the Pázmány Péter Catholic University.[8] He was also granted honorary citizenship in Radzyń Podlaski in 2016.[9] In 2017, he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit for improving Polish-Hungarian relations.[10][11]
