BE&K, Inc., was a global engineering and construction company based in Birmingham, Alabama.
History
The company was founded in 1972 and named after its founders: Peter Bolvig, William Edmonds, and Ted Kennedy. BE&K was acquired by KBR, Inc. in 2008. In 2015, BE&K Building Group (one of BE&K's former subsidiaries) and the BE&K brand, including all associated trademarks and domains, were purchased from KBR by Pernix Group, Inc.[1]
Operations
BE&K's business was primarily focused on engineering and construction for the pulp and paper industry. The company had offices throughout the US and in Europe through its subsidiaries. Its family of companies included Allstates Technical Services, As-Built Services, BE&K Building Group, BE&K Government Group, BE&K International, NorthStar Communications Group, QBEK, Rintekno, Saginaw, and SW&B Construction.
In 1989, BE&K acquired Charlotte, North Carolina-based FN Thompson Company, a commercial construction company. In 1996, BE&K acquired Greenville, South Carolina-based Suitt Construction Company, another construction company. In 2004, FN Thompson and Suitt Construction were merged under their parent company's brand to become BE&K Building Group.
Acquisition
On May 7, 2008 the company announced that it would be acquired by the Houston, Texas-based construction firm KBR, Inc. for $550 million.[2][3]
In 2015, BE&K Building Group (one of BE&K's former subsidiaries) and the BE&K brand, including all associated trademarks and domains, were purchased from KBR by Pernix Group, Inc.[1] The BE&K brand is now wholly owned by Pernix Group and solely used by BE&K Building Group. The remainder of BE&K's business and associated subsidiaries have either been fully absorbed by KBR or divested to other purchasers with all operations in Birmingham, Alabama discontinued.
