The episode features the introduction of fan-favorite character Beebo played by guest star Ben Diskin.

Plot

After the death of Martin Stein in the previous episode this episode opens on a previous version of him buying a Beebo doll for his daughter. The store claims to be out of dolls, until the location of a final one which Stein grabs and runs away with but is chased by a crowd of upset people. The episode then cuts to Leo Snart[lower-alpha 1] providing therapy to the grieving Legends.

The legends are then alerted of an anachronism causing the Vikings to conquer America. They then find that the young version of Martin Stein has been transported to a Viking colony in Vinland where he is found by Leif Erikson. This leads them to conclude that Stein and the Beebo doll is the cause of the anachronism. Meanwhile, the Viking see Beebo as a god.

The legends bring Stein onto the Waverider. Stein notices that his future self is missing, this leads Jax to attempt to inform him of his upcoming death but is stopped by Nate. Sara revives a call from Time Bureau director Ava Sharpe. Sara decides to ask Ava to help them fix the anachronism, to which Ava accepts.

The Legends party with the Vikings and after Mick Rory tries to steal mead from Beebo's alter of offering the Vikings attempt to burn him. Leo Snart puts out the fire. This allows the Vikings to find Nate and Zari stealing Beebo. After they attack them and Beebo is thrown into the air where he is melted by Mick. The Vikings proclaim Beebo a false god and prepare to leave Vinland. That is until Damien and Nora Darhk arrive and claim that Damien is Odin. The Legends then flee to the Waverider. Ava contacts the Time Bureau and they order her to return.

The Legends work out a plan to attack Darhk where they are successful in overcoming him. Although when he tries to flee Sara is temporally sent to the Spirit World.

After Jax's attempt to save Stein's life turns out to be unsuccessful as young Stein destroys the note which contains the details of his death. He helps Jax come to terms with his death and informs Sara of his decision to leave the Legends. Sara then reboards the Waverider and finds John Constantine (Matt Ryan) who asks for the assistance of the Legends.

Development and filming

The episode was directed by Kevin Mock.[8] Preparation on the episode began October 3, 2017 and concluded on the 12th of the same month. The final draft of the script was finished the next day. Filming for the episode ran from October 13 through October, 25.[1]

Writing

The episode was written by Grainne Godfree and James Eagan.[9] The episode's title is a reference to its basis in Norse mythology. In Norse Myth's the god of war god is Tyr. However, for the sake of the comedy, Tyr has been replaced with Beebo.[3]

The character of Beebo was inspired by Tickle Me Elmo.[10] During a panel at Fan Expo Vancouver the cast of Legends explained that the concept behind Beebo was the writers attempt to further delve the series further into chaos. This led to concerns the character would result in Legends of Tomorrow "jumping the shark" and the idea of Beebo would not be received well by audience.[11] However this was untrue and the character had a spin off Christmas special titled, Beebo Saves Christmas.[12]

The episode features the departure of Jefferson Jackson from the Legends. The characters exist was a creative decision as oppressed to a personal choice.[6] This left the door open for the character to return which he did in the season finale, "The Good, the Bad, and the Cuddly".[13]

Casting

Main cast members Caity Lotz, Tala Ashe, Nick Zano, Brandon Routh, Franz Drameh, Amy Louise Pemberton (voice), Dominic Purcell, Maisie Richardson-Sellers appear as Sara Lance / White Canary, Zari Tomaz, Nate Heywood / Steel, Ray Palmer / The Atom, Jefferson Jackson / Fire Storm, Gideon, Mick Rory, and Amaya Jiwe / Vixen.[9]

This is the first episode of Legends of Tomorrow to not feature Victor Garber as a series regular due to the death of his character in the previous episode.[14] However, a younger version of Martin Stein appears, this version is played by Graeme McComb.[15] McComb previously portrayed this version of the character in "Pilot, Part 2" and "Compromised".[16][17] This is the final appearance of Franz Drameh as a series regular.[18] Drameh's departure comes as a direct result of Garber's exit from the series.[6]

The guest cast includes Jes Macallan as Ava Sharpe, Matt Ryan as John Constantine,[5] Courtney Ford as Nora Darhk, Neal McDonough as Damien Darhk,[9] Wentworth Miller as Leo Snart,[19] John Noble as Mallus[20] and Ben Diskin as the titular Beebo.[21] Ryan reprises his role from the canceled NBC, Constantine television series.[22] The series was retroactively added to the Arrowverse after Ryan guest starred in the Arrow (TV series) season four episode Haunted.[23] Ryan would join the main cast in the fourth season of Legends of Tomorrow.[24]

Critical reception

Despite initial concern that Legends of Tomorrow was jumping the shark,[31] "Beebo the God of War" was met with positive reviews from critics.[32][33] Jesse Schedeen of IGN said rated the episode a 9.8 of 10 and made the claim that it was the best follow up to the tragic ending of the previous episode.[34]

The A.V. Club's Oliver Sava gave it a rating of an A-. He praised the episode for its use of Damien Darhk saying that while he had grown bored of the character it was still well executed. Sava found that the episode was good at blending comedic moments with more series moments showcasing grief with Stein's death, calming that it helped the "family dynamic" of the Legends.[32]

In a review for Den of Geek, Jim Dandeneau said that while he found the episode hilarious he was still emotionally impacted by the departure of Jefferson Jackson in the episodes ending moments. While he called the episode perfect he rated it a 4.5 of 5.[33]

Writing for Entertainment Weekly, Shirley Li praised the closure the episode provided for both Jax and Stein. She described the episode as being a good example of why the time travel genre works. Li found the ending seen with Constantine a "creepy note to end on", but was otherwise a good tease for the next episode.[35]

Beebo

Despite initial concerns, the character of Beebo was met with praise from fans and critics alike.[36] There was a demand from fans of the show of merchandise.[37][4] Beebo had a spin off Christmas special titled Beebo Saves Christmas which was received positively by critics.[38][39] The character returned multiple times through the series in different forms such as in "The Good, the Bad, and the Cuddly" as the totem avatar[40] and in "Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Five" as a magical manifestation.[41] He also appears on Legends of Tomorrow's parent shows Arrow and The Flash as a doll in the episodes "Level Two" and "The Elongated Knight Rises" respectively.[42] Beebo also serves as the cover for both the DVD and Blu-ray of "Legends of Tomorrow: The Complete Series".[43][44]
