Carricitos is an unincorporated community in Cameron County, Texas, United States.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 25 in 2000. It is located within the Rio Grande Valley and the Brownsville-Harlingen metropolitan area.

History

Carricitos is situated on a portion of the land that Bartolomé and Eugenio Fernández received as part of Spain's 1789 Concepción de Carricitos grant. Mexican ranchers who lived in the area gave the town its name sometime before the American Civil War. It housed a post office from November 1908 until January 1914. The village had six general stores and 300 residents in 1914. The village featured a cemetery and a variety of houses by 1936. Carricitos had one store and 25 residents in 1948; San Benito provided mail service to them. The village featured a cemetery and multiple homes in 1956. Between 1948 and 1991, Carricitos' population stayed at 25. In the Carricitos area, a colonia emerged in the 1960s. It was referred to as Carricitos-Landrum in 1986 and had 203 residents living in 45 homes. In 2000, there were 25 residents.[2]

Geography

Carricitos is located near the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and Farm to Market Road 2520, 7 miles (11 km) southwest of San Benito in southwestern Cameron County.[2]

Education

Carricitos had its own school in 1936 and 1948.[2] Today, the community is served by the San Benito Consolidated Independent School District. Children in the community attend Rangerville Elementary School, San Benito Riverside Middle School, and San Benito High School.
