District XVII was, according to Herodotus, the 17th satrapy of the Achaemenid Empire. It comprised the Paricanians, "Asiatic Ethiopians" ("burnt faced ones", literally "dark skinned ones";[1] referring to Indian people[2]), Oreitians, and Ichthyophagi.[3]
