The Dwarka Sector 21 metro station, on the Blue Line and Orange Line (Airport Express Line) of the Delhi Metro, is a major metro and multimodal interchange station with adjacent Dwarka ISBT Bus Terminal in the west and Bijwasan railway station in the east.[1]
History
This station was built as an extension together with Dwarka Sector 8 in order to serve Dwarka residents better and provide interchange with the Delhi Airport Express. It was designed by Absolute Architecture. The station was inaugurated on 30 October 2010 after the completion of successful trials and approval from the railway inspector.[1][2]
Passenger facilities
This station has the platform screen doors on the Airport Express line.
There are several bank ATMs at Dwarka Sector 21 metro station, including HDFC Bank, Yes Bank, Canara Bank.[3]
Besides serving as a metro interchange for the Delhi Metro, the upper levels of the building has been rented out and converted into the a mall, called Pacific D21 Mall. The building consists of the station on the underground levels and the mall and commercials activities on the remaining upper two levels including the ground floor which largely consist of the station premises with the remaining space being covered by mall rent-outs. It is also be the first Delhi Metro station to have hotel rooms within the complex.[4]
As of August 2014, with installed capacity of 500 kW, it had the largest rooftop solar plant in the city which produces enough power for all operations at Dwarka Sector 21 station.[5]
Connectivity
Dwarka Inter State Bus Terminus, on 27 acres opposite Dwarka Sector 21 metro station, construction by DTC started in 2022. Catering for 150,000 passengers per day it will have the air conditioned waiting halls, modern washrooms, airport style lounges, a five star hotel, multilevel car parking, underground parking for buses, pick up and drop off area for taxis and autorickshaws. It will cater for buses from Punjab and Haryana, and decongest the Maharana Pratap Inter State Bus Terminus at Kashmere Gate in central Delhi and Sarai Kale Khan Inter-State Bus Terminus at Sarai Kale Khan in South East Delhi.[6]
Bijwasan railway station has been upgraded to act as a major railway hub for the nearby IGI airport.
