The Embassy of the United States in Zagreb is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Croatia.[1] This 8000 m2 compound was opened on June 2, 2003. According to leaked diplomatic cables, its fifth floor is used as a regional base of CIA and NSA.[2]

The U.S. embassy in Zagreb is a charter member of the League of Green Embassies and a founding member of the Zagreb Green Building Council. According to this, embassy support recycling, energy and water use reduction programs. The embassy also sponsors American Corners at libraries in Osijek, Rijeka, Zadar, and Zagreb.[3][4]

History

The United States recognized Croatia as an independent state on April 7, 1992, during the break-up of Yugoslavia.[5] Diplomatic relations between the United States and Croatia were established on August 6, 1992, as announced by President George H.W. Bush.[5] Shortly thereafter, the American Embassy in Zagreb was opened on August 25, 1992, with Ronald Nietzke serving as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim.[5]

As a NATO ally since 2009, Croatia has contributed to various international peacekeeping missions including those in Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Libya, among others. In its regional approach, Croatia has assisted fellow NATO aspirants through the Adriatic Charter, helping them to initiate necessary defense reforms and contribute to Alliance operations. Croatia joined the European Union in 2013.[6]
