Born in 1944, Haim Mahat is an Israeli painter and sculptor.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Life
Early life and Surrealistic period
Mahat was born in 1944 in Tel Aviv during the British Mandate. At the age of 6, he was discovered by the art and theater critic, Haim Gamzo. The Jewish painter, Marc Chagall came once with Haim Gamzo, when visiting Mahat's parents' was also impressed by the child's art whom they dubber "wunder kid" in yiddish.[1][5][6]
Mahat began studying art, aged 16, in the Avni institute, founded by Aharon Avni thanks to a scholarship granted by Haim Gamzo.
Following his military service in the IAF's anti aircraft unit he continued his studies in the Medrasha for arts. There studying under Ran Shori, Pi Levi, Aba Pinchel and others.[1][6]
Mahat whilst teaching art in schools was part of the "HaMeshushe" group of Surrealists painters. During the 1970s-1990s he exhibited in Israel and the United States.[1][6]
Abstract period
Toward the end of the 20th century, Haim Mahat's art style changed drastically. Drifting from Surrealism toward the Abstract. This was also prominent in his sculpture.[1]
During the 21st century, Mahat continued exhibiting in Tel Aviv, Haifa and other Israel cities as well as internationally.[1]
