IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) is an Indian computer-based test for admission to the various undergraduate programmes in the seven IISERs, IISc Bangalore and IIT Madras.[1][2][3][4] It is one of the channels to get admission into the 5 year BS-MS Dual Degree Programme of the IISERs, 4 year BS Degree Programme of IISER Bhopal, Bachelor of Science (Research) Programme of IISc Bangalore, and 4 year BS Programme of IIT Madras. IAT consists of 60 questions, 15 questions each from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.[5]

IAT for IISERs

Candidates who have passed 10+2 or equivalent level exam with science stream in current year of application or the year before are eligible to apply for admissions. Candidates will be admitted to an IISER through one of the following three channels.

  • Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) channel
  • Joint Entrance Examination (JEE-Advanced) of the Indian Institutes of Technology
  • State and Central Boards Channel (SCB)

Students aspiring to join one of the IISERs may apply through one or more of these channels; however, they will need to submit separate applications for each channel. Candidates applying through the SCB channel will need to write the IISER Aptitude Test.[6]

IAT for other institutes

The following institutions use IAT for admitting students to their programs:

Students who wish to apply to any of the above programs (IISc, IITM) must complete both Step 1 and Step 2 detailed below.

  • Step 1: Apply to IAT on the IISER admission portal (www.iiseradmission.in).
  • Step 2: Fill up the application form on the admission portal of IISc and/or IITM as applicable.

In other words, students wishing to apply for the programs listed above must apply to both IAT and the said program separately.[9]

Test Pattern for IAT 2023

IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) will be conducted as a computer based test in centres across India.

IAT will consist of 60 questions, 15 questions each from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics.

Total time for answering the test will be 180 minutes. Questions will be of multiple choice type with only one correct answer.

  • Each correct answer will be awarded 4 marks.
  • Each incorrect answer will lead to the deduction of 1 mark.
  • Unanswered questions will be awarded 0 mark.
  • Therefore, maximum marks in IAT will be 240.

The total marks obtained by a candidate out of 240 will be considered for preparing the Rank List.

Not every candidate appearing in IAT 2023 will be awarded a rank. Rank cut-off will be announced at an appropriate time. Further, getting a rank does not guarantee offer/admission to an IISER.[10]
