Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan (1849–1919) was an Indian classical music vocalist, and the founder of Rampur-Sahaswan gharana.[1][2][3]

Early life

Inayat Hussain Khan was mainly trained in Hindustani classical music by Bahadur Hussain Khan who was a direct descendant of Mian Tansen (1493-1589).[2] Inayat Hussain Khan first married the daughter of Haddu Khan of the Gwalior gharana.[3] Later, when he was training under Bahadur Hussain Khan, he also married his daughter because Bahadur was so pleased with his 'gayaki' (singing) style and performances.[2]

Career

His singing style has influences of the Dhrupad singing typical of the Gwalior gharana, and the Rampur-Sahaswan style is sometimes regarded as an offshoot of the Gwalior gharana.[1] His compositions later were made famous by his two son-in-laws - namely Mushtaq Hussain Khan and Nisar Hussain Khan.[1][3][2][4]
