Independent Television (ITV) (Bengali: ইনডিপেনডেন্ট টেলিভিশন) is a Bangladeshi Bengali-language privately owned satellite and cable 24-hour news television channel owned by BEXIMCO, one of the largest Bangladeshi conglomerates. The channel commenced transmissions on 28 July 2011, and is headquartered in Tejgaon, Dhaka.[2]
History
In January 2010, India-based NDTV collaborated with BEXIMCO with a goal of launching a Bangladeshi news channel, which was given a broadcasting license by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission on 20 October 2009.[3][4] Independent Television commenced test transmissions on 20 October 2010, and officially began broadcasting on 28 July 2011.[5][6] It is the first television channel in Bangladesh to use the MPEG-4 technology to broadcast.[2][7] Independent Television produced a quiz show titled Bangladesh Jiggasha, which premiered on the channel on 12 October 2018.[8] In December 2018, the channel began broadcasting using the Bangabandhu-1 satellite.[9]
Programming
Independent Television usually broadcasts news programming. It has introduced open news room studio presentation concept and connected to six divisional bureau offices for on screen live news analysis from its first on aired news and popular talk show "Ajker Bangladesh".[10] However, it also airs non-news programming, such as Ajker Bangladesh,[11][12] which Khaled Muhiuddin hosted earlier. Other programs include Rat 9 Tar Bangladesh, Joto Khela and Goal. It also covers shows on culture, business, and entertainment. During several occasions such as holidays, Independent Television broadcasts special programming, such as Bazar Sodai, a shopping program aired on the last day of the month of Ramadan, observing Eid al-Fitr.[13]
Talash
Talash is a popular investigative crime show that airs every Friday at 9 pm. The title translates to 'search' in Bengali.
Ajker Bangladesh
It was a current affairs show that spotted the day's highlighted topic. This show was hosted by Khaled Muhiuddin, and authorities decided to discontinue the show when he left this channel.
Digital Platform
Independent TV is active on digital platforms as well. It covers a wide range of news beyond the broadcasting channel through their website, Youtube, and Facebook.
It's official YouTube channel (@IndependentTelevision) has more than 8M subscribers.[14]
