Print Center New York (formerly International Print Center New York or IPCNY) is a non-profit exhibition space dedicated to exploring the dynamic and accessible medium of print within broader artistic and cultural discourses. Print Center New York engages audiences in a welcoming environment, both onsite and online, through interdisciplinary exhibitions, innovative scholarship, educational programming, and digital resources. A 501(c)(3) institution, Print Center New York depends on foundation, government, individual support, and members’ contributions to fund its programs.

History

In addition to its major art museums, New York City boasts an ecosystem of medium-specific organizations that facilitate a deeper exploration of specific art forms. Within that context, Print Center New York (formerly International Print Center New York or IPCNY) has been a central portal into what is happening in the world of contemporary print.

Chartered in 1995 under Founding Director Anne Coffin, IPCNY launched its first exhibition season in 2000 with Hard Pressed: 600 Years of Prints & Process at AXA Gallery in midtown Manhattan. Also in 2000, we opened our own exhibition space in Chelsea with its inaugural New Prints Program, which championed new work through this face-paced, open-call exhibition series. Guest-curated projects have been as innovative and varied as their titles: Black Pulp!, Edge of Visibility, Pulled In Brooklyn, Paper Borders, and Suspended Animation, among others.

In 2016, Print Center New York hired its first Board appointed Director, Judy Hecker from The Museum of Modern Art's Department of Drawings & Prints, whose vision has built upon the organization's core mission, deepening its artist-centered approach and exploring the role of prints within a broader artistic and cultural context. Hecker has steered a new chapter of growth, including expanded programming and audience engagement, and the new space with a new identity as Print Center New York.

New Space

In 2022, Print Center New York moved from its original location at 508 West 26th Street to the ground floor of 535 West 24th Street. The 4,100 square feet new space is designed by architect Markus Dochantschi of studioMDA. The organization also launched a new brand identity and new name along with the move.

Exhibitions

Print Center New York generally shows three exhibitions per year, with two guest-curated exhibitions and one open call based program called New Voices, which is Print Center's pilot program launched in 2022 to support emerging artists. Recent exhibitions at the new space include Nicole Eisenman: Prince and Visual Record: The Materiality of Sound in Print.
