Sonia Gandhi was born Edvige Antonia Albina Maino to Stefano and Paola Maino on December 9, 1946, in Lusiana, a tiny town of fewer than 3000 inhabitants, nestled quietly in the crisp air of the verdant lower Alps of northeast Italy.⟨.....⟩ The quarter of Lusiana where the family lived - in a gray-fronted house with wooden shutters at the windows - was called Màini; people with the Maino surname had been there for several generations
