According to political expert Eduard Urazaev, Magomed Musaev's decision to buy the Russian edition of the Forbes magazine was driven by political rather than business interests as leverage against alleged law enforcement inquests into his father-in-law Ramazan Abdulatipov.[11]
On October 20, 2023, The Washington Post reported that Magomed Musaev is the shadow buyer of the Forbes magazine, and that the American businessman Austin Russell was only fronting the deal.[12] Later, members of the Ukraine parliament appealed to members of the US Senate and House of Representatives with a call to intervene in the deal. People's Deputy of Ukraine Oleksiy Goncharenko noted that the purchase of Forbes by could have been coordinated by Russian intelligence services.[13] A month after the reports, the magazine announced that the deal fell apart.[14]

In 2021, Definition Services, a company associated with the family of billionaire and senator Suleyman Kerimov, initiated a lawsuit in the state of Delaware (USA) against Magomed Musaev's company GVA Auto. The lawsuit concerned the discussion of the distribution of Luminar shares with the director of GVA Capital Pavel Cherkashin.
