Mpho Gift Modise (born January 1980) is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature since 2019. A former ANC Youth League activist and civil servant, he was elected to his first term in the legislature in the 2019 general election.
Early life and career
Modise was born in 1980 January 01 as Siphosami Bonisile Sigasa in Zola Soweto to Mr Napoleon Mzuleki Sigasa and Limakatso Emily Maine, but changed his name in his childhood after he left Soweto to go stay with his mother and the late Mr Mohau Isaac Modise.[1] He was raised in Zola, Soweto and in Sharpeville Vaal, where he really experienced politics up close and personal.
It was his time spend in Sharpeville that found him spending more of his time with comrade Molahlehi David Congo Majake, Banzo Phohlela, Sefatsa Sefatsa, Kenny Ndongeni, Michael Rapasa and Jikitjela amongst many. He is the former ANC Spokesperson in Gauteng and currently serves his second term in the ANC PEC. He has been in the ANC PEC since 2013 as the ANCYL Provincial Task Team Coordinator and elected the ANCYL Provincial Secretary. Hon Modise is currently serving as the ANC Gauteng Legislature Caucus Spokesperson.
He finally matriculated at Isizwe Sechaba Secondary School after having expelled in different schools where he was elected President of School Representative Council.[1] While a student, he was active in the Congress of South African Students {COSAS} School Drama and Debating team, and he later became active in the African National Congress {ANC} and South African Communist Party {SACP}. He ultimately became chairperson of his local ANC branch in Vereeniging and also served as both Regional and Provincial Secretary of the ANC Youth League in the Vaal and Gauteng Province.[1] He is currently in the process of changing from Modise to his father's surname of Sigasa. The loss of my two brothers Mkhulu Michael Sigasa and Tau Simon Modise has been heavy on me.
Before becoming a public representative, he worked in public administration at the Gauteng Youth Commission, the Office of the Gauteng Premier, the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development, and Emfuleni Local Municipality.[1] As was his high school days, he could not finish at two institution of higher learning. He is currently studying towards Master of Public Management at Regenesys Business School and hold Post Graduate Diploma from University of Johannesburg.
Legislative career
Modise was elected to his first term in the legislature in the 2019 general election, ranked 33rd on the ANC's provincial party list.[2] After the election he was elected to chair the legislature's Portfolio Committee on Infrastructure Development.[3] He also sits in the following Portfolio Committees 1. Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation. 2. Standing Committee on Public Accounts. He is also a former member of the following committees 1. Social Development. 2. Oversight Committee on Premier's Office and Legislature.
Personal life
He is married to Boitumelo and has two daughters and a son. He is a die hard of Orlando Pirates football club, which he refers to as THE INSTITUTION of Sofasonke Mpanza. He is trained in both community and formal classical theatre. Kwaito is his first love when it comes to music followed by classical music. [1] Having brought up in both Soweto and Vaal, he is conversant in IsiZulu, Sesotho, a bit of Setswana, Sepedi, IsiXhosa and English, plus of course township lingo.
