The Musk family is a wealthy family of South African origin that is largely active in the United States and Canada. The Musks are of English, Anglo-Canadian, Pennsylvania Dutch, and Swiss descent. The family is known for its entrepreneurial endeavours.[1][2][3] Elon Musk is the wealthiest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of US$232 billion as of December 2023, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.[4]
History
Elon Musk's paternal great-grandmother was a Dutchwoman descended from the Dutch Free Burghers, while one of his maternal great-grandparents came from Switzerland.[2][5] His paternal grandmother was British and his paternal grandfather was South African.[6] Elon Musk's father, Errol Musk,[7] is a South African former electrical and mechanical engineer consultant and property developer,[6] who was involved in the emerald business at some point in the 1980s,[8][9] and was a member of the South African Progressive Federal Party.[10]: 225, fn 119
His maternal grandparents were celebrity explorers who lived in South Africa and Canada and searched for the Lost City of the Kalahari.[11]

- Maye Musk (née Haldeman; born 1948), model and dietitian. She has appeared on the cover of several magazines, including a Time magazine health edition, Women's Day, and Vogue; Elon's mother.[12]
- Elon Musk (born 1971), entrepreneur and business magnate, CEO, CTO, and Chairman of SpaceX, Tesla, Twitter (now X), and Neuralink. He was Time Magazine 2021 Person of the Year.[13]
- Kimbal Musk (born 1972), entrepreneur, philanthropist, and restaurateur. He founded Zip2 in 1998 with his brother Elon Musk and later sold it to Compaq for $307 million. He is the co-founder and chairman of Big Green.[14]
- Tosca Musk (born 1974), filmmaker and sister of Elon Musk; she is the co-founder of Passionflix, an OTT entertainment streaming platform and production company.[15]
- Lyndon Rive (born 1977), businessman who co-founded SolarCity and served as its CEO until 2017. He is a cousin to Elon through his mother Kaye Rive, Maye Musk's twin.[16]
