Political stability is a situation characterized by the preservation of an intact and smoothly functioning government or political system, avoiding significant disruptions or changes over an extended duration. Political stability signifies a state of tranquility, organization, and sustained continuity within the political domain. It is marked by consistent institutions and policies, as well as a commitment to upholding the rule of law.[1][2]

Societies with political stability experience a decreased probability of encountering major political upheavals, civil unrest, or sudden changes in leadership. Political stability is essential for a nation's development, economic growth, and social unity. It enables long-term planning, investment, and prosperity, as businesses and citizens can rely on consistent governance and policies.

Countries with political stability

As of September 2021, several countries were known for having relatively strong political stability.[3][4] Countries that have been historically acknowledged for their political stability include:

Ghana

Since transitioning to multi-party democracy in 1992, Ghana has earned a reputation as one of the most stable countries in West Africa. Since then, it has effectively conducted five free and fair elections, resulting in two peaceful transfers of power.[5]

In the 2016 World Press Freedom Index, Ghana held the 26th position globally and ranked second in Africa.[6][7] The index assesses media pluralism, media independence, legislative framework quality, and journalist safety across 180 countries.

Finland

Finland is headed by Prime Minister Sanna Marin, who is the world's youngest sitting prime minister.[8][9] In 2022, U.S. News & World Report ranked Finland at 18th position in its overall "Best Countries" rankings and received praise for its dedication to environmental care and climate goals.[3]

Switzerland

In 2022, U.S. News & World Report ranked Switzerland at the top of its "Best Countries" list.[10]

Canada

In 2021, Canada secured the top spot in the comprehensive Best Countries rankings. Guided by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau,[11] the country excelled not only in overall rankings but also in vital categories like quality of life and social purpose. Canada's commitment to well-being, dedication to a meaningful society, and emphasis on social justice further solidified its global reputation under Prime Minister Trudeau's leadership.[3][12]
