She had previously completed a bachelor's degree in Religious Thought from the University of Pennsylvania and an master's thesis at the University of Toronto's Department of Near Eastern Studies. Dr. Katary taught Classical Studies, including Egyptology courses, at Thorneloe University, an affiliated college of Laurentian University for over thirty years.[2][3] She was a founding member of the Canadian Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities and served as an associate editor of the society's academic journal, The Journal of the Society for the Study of Egyptian Antiquities.[2]

She died unexpectedly on 6 August 2016.[2] Following her death a memorial lecture was established by the SSEA.[4]
