SapientX is an American artificial intelligence company known for developing 3D, A.I. characters, chatbots, and digital assistants.[1][2] It was founded in 2016[3][4] and is headquartered in Santa Cruz, California.[3][4]

History

SapientX was founded by David Colleen, Bruce Wilcox, and Maclen Marvit in 2016.[4] Prior to founding SapientX, Colleen was known for developing the 3D virtual world VirtualSOMA[5] and serving as the founder and CEO of the software development and computer graphics company Planet 9 Studios,[6][7][19][20] while Wilcox was an artificial intelligence programmer known for creating the Loebner Prize-winning chatbot Rose.[8] Marvit had worked as a rocket scientist.[9] Before formally launching SapientX, the three had worked together on prototype conversational AI assistants for automobile manufacturers including BMW, Visteon, and Denso.[4] They had also worked on AI and bot technology for U.S. intelligence agencies.[10]

In October 2017, SapientX was one of the companies that participated in an AI-focused session of the Health 2.0 annual conference in Santa Clara, California.[11]

SapientX unveiled one of its conversational chatbots at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show.[12]

At CES 2022, SapientX exhibited a life-sized, talking AI character named Sage, which was created using Epic GamesUnreal Engine and MetaHuman Creator.[13] Sage was presented as an example of SapientX’s voice assistant systems, which are intended for use as guides in areas such as retailers, airports, and train stations.[14][15]

SapientX served as an exhibitor in the Trailblazers Zone at the InfoComm trade show in 2023.[16]

Products

After SapientX’s incorporation, it released chatbots based on Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton for the 2016 United States Presidential election.[17][12][18] These were SapientX’s first publicly-released chatbots.[18]

SapientX developed a 3D character named Chief to serve as a guide at Liberty Station in San Diego.[2] SapientX also developed 3D avatars that use artificial intelligence to answer questions at the Edmonton Airport.[2]

SapientX also provides white-label software that adds conversational voice capabilities to technology in industries such as transportation, health, and video conferencing.[19] They are also continuing development on conversational AI for vehicles that incorporates technology such as speech recognition, natural language processing, and avatars.[19]

An earlier version of SapientX’s technology was used in the virtual pet application Talking Angela.[9]
