Qaem Shahr ⓘ (Persian: قائمشهر, also Romanized as Qā’em Shahr; formerly known as Shāhi (Persian: شاهی)[4] is a city in the Central District of Qaem Shahr County, Mazandaran province, Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district.[5] Originally known as Aliyabad, the name Ŝâhi (Shahi) was used until the Iranian Revolution in 1979 when the city acquired its current name.
At the 2006 National Census, its population was 174,246 in 48,055 households.[6] The following census in 2011 counted 196,050 people in 60,347 households.[7] The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 204,953 people in 68,407 households.[2]
The city is 237 kilometres (147 mi) northeast of Tehran; 20 kilometres (12 mi) southeast of Babol; and 23 kilometres (14 mi) southwest of Sari, the capital of the province.
In 1951, Qaem Shahr's population was around 18,000, growing to 123,684 in 1991. The city is where the North Iranian railway quits the fertile plains of Mazandaran to cross the highest mountain range of the Middle East, the Alborz.
