Shin Won-ho (Korean: 신원호; Hanja: 申元浩; born August 28, 1975) is a South Korean director and television producer. He is known for producing and directing the acclaimed anthology series Reply.[1][2][3]

Education

Shin entered the Department of Chemical Engineering at Seoul National University's College of Engineering in 1994. During his college years, he nurtured a passion for becoming a film director and actively sought opportunities to gain experience. As a result, he volunteered with a film company as staff. In 2001, Shin successfully completed his studies and obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering from Seoul National University. Additionally, he pursued a minor in Communications, further expanding his knowledge and skills in the field.[4]

Career

Career in KBS

Following his graduation in 2001, Shin applied to KBS during the 27th KBS Open Recruitment and successfully joined as a staff member in KBS Entertainment. He said, "For jobs that require creativity like PD, there are advantages (as a chemical engineer)."[4][5] Shin He began his career as an assistant director in the network's variety department. His first work was The World is Now.

In 2002, he was assigned the role of assistant director to Lee Myung-han in the show "Declaration of Freedom Today is Saturday – The War Of Roses." The program revolved around male entertainers and female college students who would meet and find a mate at a mountain lodge. It was during this program that Shin collaborated with fellow assistant director Na Young-seok and Lee Woo-jung, who served as the main writer.[6][7][8] Together, they gained recognition as a group known as the Yeouido Research Institute,[note 1] later also known as Lee Myung-han's division.[10][11][12]

In 2002, when Lee Myung-Han was in charge of directing "Super TV Sunday is Fun", his juniors took on the responsibility of directing each segment of the show. Shin Won-ho directed "Kung Kung Ta", while Na Young-seok directed Let's Go! Dream Team - Season 1.[13]

In 2004, Shin took on the role of assistant director for the quiz show "Star Golden Bell". During the same year, he was also assigned as an assistant director for KBS daily sitcom "Old Miss Diary". It was directed by Kim Seok-yun. It aired from November 22, 2004, to November 4, 2005.[5]

In 2004, Shin took on the role of assistant director for the quiz show "Star Golden Bell". Concurrently, he was also assigned as an assistant director for the KBS daily sitcom "Old Miss Diary", which was directed by Kim Seok-yun. The sitcom aired from November 22, 2004, to November 4, 2005.

Following this, Shin made a comeback to the entertainment industry as the main director of "Heroine 6", a sequel to sequel Heroine 5.[14] Heroine 6 was one of the segments of the show "Happy Sunday", produced and directed by Lee Myung-han. Shin Won-hoo took over as the director when Lee Myung-han and Na Young-seok were working on another segment for "Happy Sunday". The show aired on KBS 2 from May 8, 2005, to April 29, 2007.[15]

From 2009 to 2011, Shin held the position of the main director for the variety show Happy SundayQualifications of Men.[16] During this time, his exceptional work in the field of entertainment led him to receive several prestigious awards. He was honored with the 'Korea PD Award for Best Entertainment Work' as well as the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award in the Broadcasting and Video Grand Prix at the Korea Contents Awards. Additionally, he received recognition at the 17th Korea Entertainment and Arts Awards, where he was awarded the Best Entertainment Program and the 47th ABU Award in the Entertainment category.[5][17]

In 2011, Shin submitted his resignation letter to KBS and transferred to CJ E&M.[18]

Career in CJ E&M

After his move, Shin initially had no intention of entering the realm of dramas. His focus was primarily on exploring new possibilities in reality programming, drawing upon his prior experience at KBS. News coverage in November 2011 speculated that Shin's comeback would likely involve a new reality program in the entertainment field, given his background and expertise.[19] However, tvN Director Song Chang-eui proposed the idea of Shin trying his hand at a drama, assuring him that he would be paired with a talented drama writer. Initially, Shin declined the offer due to concerns that his role would be diminished if a drama writer took over, reducing him to a mere "Jjiksae" (an insignificant figure). He expressed his willingness to take on the project only if he could have the opportunity to create a fresh version and test it out. Eventually, Director Song Chang-eui agreed to his condition, leading Shin to assemble a production team that included writer Lee Woo-jung and other entertainment writers.[20] They created drama Reply 1997, his first work after moving to CJ E&M.[21]

In April 2012, tvN revealed that Shin Won-ho was directing a drama titled Reply 1997, scheduled to air in June. Lee Myung-han served as executive producers, with Lee Woo-jung as the scriptwriter.[22][23] This project was significant for Shin Won-ho, as it marked his first work at CJ E&M after transferring from KBS in July of the previous year.[24] After a month-long delay, the first self-produced drama by tvN, Reply 1997, was broadcast on July 24, 2012.[25]

Reply 1997 revolves around the lives of six friends from Busan. The timeline of the story jumps back and forth between their past as 18-year-old high school students in 1997 and their present as 33-year-olds, attending their high school reunion dinner in 2012, where a couple announces their engagement. It also portrays the emergence of extreme fan culture in the 1990s, when the first generation of idol groups such as H.O.T. and Sechs Kies rose to fame and K-pop was beginning to flourish.[26][27][28] In addition to reminiscing about the past through the two idols, the love stories of Seong Si-won (Jung Eun-ji), Yoon Yoon-jae (Seo In-guk), and Yoon Tae-woong (Song Jong-ho) added to the fun.

The initial buzz surrounding 'Reply 1997' targeted individuals in their 30s, but soon expanded to encompass a wide age range, reaching even those in their 50s, thanks to positive word-of-mouth reviews that praised its combination of entertainment and relatability. The key to its widespread appeal and resonance across different generations lay in its storytelling approach, which cleverly utilized the themes of memory, nostalgia, and retro to present the narrative from various perspectives. This strategy allowed the drama to gain popularity and garner empathy from a diverse audience. Moreover, the show's success contributed to a resurgence of 1990s popular culture or retro craze.[21][29]

Beyond its dedicated fandom, 'Reply 1997' attracted attention for its meticulous depiction of the IMF crisis and the political climate of the time, which served as a backdrop to the story. The actors' performances, including their use of regional dialects and the frequent injection of humor every five seconds, played a significant role in the drama's box office success. The show capitalized on the creative freedom afforded by cable dramas, presenting a detailed and realistic portrayal of the era while incorporating a compelling romantic storyline that added tension. The exceptional acting by Jung Eun-ji, Seo In-guk, Eun Ji-won, Hoya, Lee Si-eon, and Shin So-yul garnered high acclaim.[21][30]

The show has received high ratings and critical acclaim, making it one of the highest-rated Korean dramas in cable television history.[31] Its authenticity, humor, and heart have been praised by both audiences and critics, who also appreciate its well-researched and refreshing take on the genre.[32] After the show aired, it was credited with starting the "retro" trend in South Korea, and media and cultural commentators have observed a growing fascination with 1990s pop culture.[33][34][35] In particular, the show reignited interest in the "first generation" of K-pop idol groups, who rose to fame in the 1990s before the Korean Wave, and were not as well-known to international audiences as the younger generations.[36]

In April 2013, tvN announced the second installment of the Reply series. Despite having the same writer, director and producer, also the inclusion of Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa in the cast, Reply 1994 is not a prequel to Reply 1997. While it maintains the concept of a coming-of-age drama combined with 1990s nostalgia, it introduces a completely new plot and characters.[37][38] Initially, director Shin Won-ho and writer Lee Woo-jung intended to set their first Reply series in 1994, the year they were college freshmen. However, after casting Sechs Kies member Eun Ji-won, they decided to change the year to 1997. This decision was influenced by the fact that the fandoms of H.O.T. and Sechs Kies were at their peak in 1997, which created an interesting contrast to the struggling Korean economy during the IMF crisis.[39] Feeling that they had enough material for another series, Shin and Lee returned to their original plan and created Reply 1994.[40][41]

Reply 1994 (2013), which deals with the story of young people in the eight provinces in the background of 1994, continued to be a blast, recording the highest ever viewership rating of 14.3% in cable drama history. In particular, the direction of Shin, who is from entertainment, has become a hot topic. Regarding this, Shin said in an interview, "There are definitely pluses when people are open to doing what they want to do rather than acting forcedly." I thought it was the same with acting," he said, revealing his intention to direct.[42]

In October 2015, Lee Myung-han, tvN's director, unveiled an impressive drama lineup to commemorate tvN's 10th anniversary. It kicked off in November with the highly anticipated third installment of the Reply series, Reply 1988.

Reply series, Reply 1997, Reply 1994, which aired in 2013, and Reply 1988, which aired in 2016, were all successful in terms of viewership and popularity, despite the challenging Korean climate for seasonal dramas.[43][44] The fact that "even a single line of dialogue was meticulously crafted through collaborative meetings" sheds light on why the series garnered an exceptional response. Through meticulous artistic collaboration, PD Shin was able to achieve remarkable success and establish himself as a prominent director.[20] Lee Myung-Han explained the success of Reply series with black swan theory.[45]

Prison Playbook is written by one of Reply series junior writers, Jung Bo-hoon.[46][47] Lee Woo-jung was served as creator in the drama.[48] The genre is black comedy depicting the story of superstar baseball player Kim Je-hyeok, who became a criminal overnight and thrown to prison, and the lives of the people living in prison with him. The series was a commercial hit and became one of the highest-rated series in Korean cable television history.[49]

Following the success of Prison Playbook, Shin collaborated once again with Lee Woo-jung in creating Hospital Playlist, a medical drama series. It portrays the daily lives of five doctors: Lee Ik-jun (played by Jo Jung-suk), Ahn Jeong-won (played by Yoo Yeon-seok), Kim Jun-wan (played by Jung Kyung-ho), Yang Seok-hyeong (played by Kim Dae-myung), and Chae Song-hwa (played by Jeon Mi-do). These doctors, who are in their forties, work at the Yulje Medical Centre, and their friendship was established during their time in medical school.

Producer Shin Won-ho gave a passionate lecture on the subject of 'the production process and behind-the-scenes of broadcasting programs' at the 'SAC Youth Broadcasting Writer Camp' held at the Sakarirang Hall in the main building of Seoul National University of Arts.[50]

Shin worked as a director at CJ E&M from 2011 until July 2018. He then moved on to become a drama director at CJ ENM E&M Division from July 2018 to January 2023. As of January 2023, Shin joined CJ E&M subsidiary Eggs is Coming.[51]

Personal life

Shin married his current wife in 2005. They had one child that was born in 2009.[52]
