Suzane Pires Cardozo (born Suzane Lira Pires; 17 August 1992), simply known as Suzane,[3] is a Brazilian-born Portuguese professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Santos and the Portugal women's national team.

Early life

Suzane was born and raised in São Paulo,[4] but moved to Stuttgart at young age.[1] After representing Juventus-SP as a youth,[1] she was offered a scholarship at the Southern Connecticut State University, playing for the Southern Connecticut Owls.[4]

Club career

Suzane has played for the Boston Breakers in the National Women's Soccer League.[5][6][7] She was waived by the Boston Breakers in October 2015,[8] and returned to her home country with Portuguesa.

In 2016, Suzane joined Santos. She helped the club to win their first-ever Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol Feminino Série A1 in 2017 as a starter, but suffered a knee injury afterwards, and opted to leave the club at the end of the season to follow her husband to Portugal.[1]

On 5 September 2018, after a period without a club, Suzane joined Marítimo.[9] On 9 April 2021, she signed for Ferroviária.[10]

On 9 January 2024, after being a regular starter at AFE Suzane returned to Santos.[11]

International career

Besides Brazil, Suzane was also eligible to play for Portugal through her paternal grandfather, who was born in Braga.[12][13] She made her senior debut with the latter on 26 November 2015, in a 6–1 win over Montenegro.

On 6 July 2017, Suzane was called up to the UEFA Women's Euro 2017, the nation's first ever continental competition.[14] On 5 July 2022, she was included in the 23-women squad for the UEFA Women's Euro 2022, replacing injured Andreia Jacinto.[15]

Personal life

Suzane is married to Brazilian male footballer Gauther Martins Cardozo, with whom she has a son, who is also called Gauther.[16]
