Its lyrics revolves around a protagonist that " trying to get the other person to say everything on their mind." It was written by Danke, and the composition was handled by Woo Min Lee "collapsedone" and Like (MRCH).
"Talk That Talk" received generally favorable reviews from critics for its mature, bubblegum, and retro production. The track peaked at number 20 on the Circle Digital Chart, at number 18 on the Billboard Global 200, and in the top-ten in numerous countries, including Japan, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam.

Background and release
On July 12, 2022, plans for Twice's comeback were released. On July 26, the track list was released, revealing the title track for Between 1&2 would be "Talk That Talk".[4] On August 5, a schedule was released with the dates of teasers.[6] On August 9, the group released a concept video along with a snippet of the single on TikTok.[7] On August 24 and 25, the group released two teasers for the music video.[8] On August 26, the song's music video was released.[9]
Composition
"Talk That Talk" was composed by Lee Woo-min "Collapsedone", who previously co-composed some of Twice's singles, such as "Knock Knock" and "The Feels". The lyrics, written by the lyricist team Danke, are about "trying to get the other person to say everything on their mind", which relates to the theme of the music video, where Twice undertakes a mission to make their fandom, Once, say "I love you" to Twice.[10][11] It is a pop, bubblegum and dance-pop track that incorporate 80s newtro-inspired sound and "lush" synths production. The song starts with a melody similar to "TT," while the rest of the song "dive[s] into an exciting future with dizzying speed, culminating in a captivating chorus."[1][2][3] In terms of musical notation, the song is written in the key of E-flat minor with a tempo of 120 beats per minute.[12]
Member Dahyun described it as an "addictive" retro pop song "that reminds you of the year 2000".[10] Jeongyeon noted that the song's concept is Y2K, and the track embodies the retro concept.[10]
Critical reception
NME's Tanu I. Raj reviewed the song and stated that "perhaps no other song is more representative of that glow-up than the retro-pop lead single ‘Talk That Talk’. The track opens with a melody reminiscent of the starting riffs of ‘TT,’ but that’s all the throwback you’ll get – TWICE immediately dive into an exciting future with dizzying speed, culminating in a captivating chorus which sounds as sweet as it is seductive.[1] Billboard praised the song's fizzy production and its explosive chorus as well as the usage of the Y2K-theme in its music video, writing "the song’s Y2K-themed video, fizzy production and explosive chorus, the girl group demonstrates yet again that no one does bubblegum pop quite like it does."[2]
