Tata Teleservices Limited along with its subsidiary Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Limited (NSE: TTML, BSE:  532371) (Tata Teleservices) offers a comprehensive portfolio of services including Connectivity, Collaboration, Cloud & SaaS, Security, and Marketing solutions for businesses  under the brand name Tata Tele Business Services (TTBS). Tata Teleservices has an extensive and robust wireline network and offers its products and services in more than 60 cities across India. Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Limited is listed on BSE and NSE in India.[4][5][6]

History

On March 13, 1995, Tata Tele (Maharashtra) Limited was founded as Hughes Ispat Limited, operating under the legal framework of the Companies Act of 1956. On April 26, 2000, the company changed its name to Hughes Tele.com (India) Limited to reflect its emphasis on broadband services.[8]

On February 13, 2003, the company underwent a name change to Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Limited. It currently operates as a subsidiary of Tata Teleservices Limited.[9]

In 2009, the company introduced mobile voice calling based on a pay per use model.[10]

According to Business Today Report, In November 2010, Tata Teleservices became the first private telecommunications operator to launch 3G services in India.[11]

As per the Economic Times report, Tata Teleservices operates a long fiber optic network spanning 132,000 kilometers and has a presence in over 70 cities. Tata Teleservices operates as a channel partner-based organization with a partner model encompassing approximately 1800+ partners nationwide.[12]

In February 2008, TTSL announced that it would provide CDMA mobile services targeted towards the youth, in association with the Virgin Group on a franchisee model basis.

In November 2008, Japanese telecom giant NTT Docomo picked up a 26 per cent equity stake in Tata Indicom, a subsidiary of Tata Teleservices, for about ₹130.7 billion (US$1.6 billion) or an enterprise value of ₹502.69 billion (US$6.3 billion).[13]

NTT DoCoMo announced on 25 April 2014 that they would sell 100% of their shares in Tata Indicom to Tata Teleservices and exit Indian market. The company had reported a loss of $780 million during financial year ending 31 March 2014.[14]

By 1 April 2015, all Virgin Mobile CDMA & GSM customers have been migrated into the umbrella Tata Indicom brand (Tata Indicom for Mumbai NCR).

In April 2015 Tata Teleservices drop the DoCoMo from its telecom brand Tata Docomo. According to The Hindu report The decision was made several months prior to the termination of the telecommunications company's contract with the Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo, allowing them to continue using the brand until the agreement's conclusion.[15][16]

In August 2017, Tata Teleservices sought to exit mobile network division due to large losses and debt, then sold its unit to Bharti Airtel in a debt free and cash-free deal and described as virtually free; Airtel will only pay a part of Tata Teleservices's unpaid spectrum payment liability.[17][18][19] In November 2017, Tata Teleservices customers transitioned to the Airtel mobile network under an Intra Circle Roaming (ICR) arrangement. SIM cards and billing plans remained the same.[20] The consumer mobile businesses of Tata Docomo, Tata Teleservices (TTSL) and Tata Teleservices Maharashtra Limited (TTML) have been merged into Bharti Airtel from 1 July 2019.[21][22][23]

On 9 October 2017 Tata Teleservices announced it is preparing an exit plan for most of its 5,000-odd employees, which includes a notice of three to six months, severance packages for those willing to leave earlier, a voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) for elders, while transferring only a small part of its employees to other group companies.[24]

On 12 October 2017, Bharti Airtel announced that it would acquire the consumer mobile businesses of Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTSL) and Tata Teleservices Maharastra Ltd (TTML) in a debt-free cash-free deal. The deal will essentially be free for Airtel which will only incur TTSL's unpaid spectrum payment liability. TTSL will continue to operate its enterprise, fixed line and broadband businesses and its stake in tower company Viom Networks.[25][26][27] The deal received approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in mid-November 2017.[28][29] On 29 August 2018, Bharti Airtel, got its shareholders approval for the merger proposal with Tata Teleservices.[30]

On 17 January 2019 NCLT Delhi gave final approval merger between Tata Docomo and Airtel.[31] Department of Telecom (DoT), and Competition Commission of India (CCI) gave green signals for merger deal between Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservices.[32] The consumer mobile businesses of Tata Docomo, Tata Teleservices (TTSL) and Tata Teleservices Maharashtra Limited (TTML) have been merged into Bharti Airtel from 1 July 2019.[33]

Product

According to The Economic Times report In 2018, Tata Tele Business Services introduced VPN solutions intended for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with an emphasis on enhancing security and privacy features. The Smart Virtual Private Network (VPN) is designed to secure public cloud networks, offering seamless connectivity and proactive protection against cyber threats.[34]

In 2019, Tata Tele Business Services introduced SmartOffice, an integrated applications box designed to cater to the information and communication technology (ICT) requirements of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Mumbai. This solution combines voice, data, storage, and applications, providing an option for enterprises establishing new offices. It integrates functionalities such as IP-PBX, Data' Router, Wi-Fi Router, Firewall, and DHCP server, eliminating the need for separate voice and data infrastructure, thereby lowering overall ICT costs.[35]

In 2021, amidst the pandemic, Tata Tele Business Services launched Smartflo, a cloud communication suite aimed at supporting hybrid work culture. This platform enables seamless communication among stakeholders, fosters customer engagement, and empowers employees to work remotely. Smartflo boasts features such as intelligent call routing, sentiment analysis, and API integration, ensuring scalability, security, and reliability.[36][37]

In September 2021, Tata Tele Business Services introduced EZ Cloud Connect, a cloud connectivity gateway that establishes a dedicated private network connection from company premises to Cloud Service Providers (CSP).[38]

In October 2021, Tata Tele Business Services introduced Smart Internet, a solution designed for digitally-driven businesses requiring fast internet connectivity and robust cybersecurity protection. This pioneering solution combines high-speed connectivity with cloud-based security and enhanced control. Key attributes of Smart Internet include security against cyber threats, ultra-fast and reliable connectivity, manageability, and visibility. The solution protects against botnets, malware, ransomware, and more, ensuring robust DNS security.[39][40]

In 2022, Tata Tele Business Services began offering technology solutions to assist Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) in India. These solutions are designed to aid SMBs in adjusting and growing, while also tackling challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic.[41]

Partnership

According to The Hindu In July 2021, Tata Teleservices partnered with Zoom Video Communications to provide improved communication solutions to enterprises and individuals. Utilizing Zoom's platform, Tata Teleservices aimed to meet the rising demand for unified communications in businesses, enhancing collaboration. The partnership brought forth Zoom's communication services like Zoom Meetings and Zoom Webinars to enable more effective collaborative interactions.[42] [43]

In October 2022, Tata Tele Business Services and Google Cloud partnered to provide Google Workspace to small and medium businesses (SMBs) in India, catering to their communication and collaboration requirements in a hybrid work setting.[44]

In 2022, Tata Tele Business Services introduced Microsoft Azure services to assist Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) in updating their operations through cloud migration on a flexible pay-as-you-go basis. This move aims to enhance customer experiences and facilitate easy scalability.[45][46]

In 2022, Tata Tele Business Services expanded its Smartflo cloud communication suite by integrating the WhatsApp Business Platform. This integration allowed businesses to efficiently manage global customer conversations and inquiries, leading to improved interactions in the modern business environment. The integration with Smartflo offered a comprehensive solution that aligned customer experiences across various channels, including websites, mobile apps, and social media.[47][48]

  • In July 2022, Tata Tele Business Services received the Asia Pacific Stevie Award in the Silver category for their innovative use of technology to improve customer service.[50]
  • In 2022, Tata Tele Business Services received recognition at the 8th Edition of the National Awards for Leadership & Excellence. The company was honored with awards in three categories: Best New Brand, Product, or Service Launch; Marketing Communications Business to Business; and Marketing Excellence in the Telecom Services Sector.[51]
  • In April 2023, Tata Tele Business Services was acknowledged for its achievements, receiving three accolades at the ET Telecom Awards 2023. These awards were in the categories of Enterprise Service Provider of the Year, Enterprise Digital Transformation of the Year, and Best Customer Service.[52]
