The Free Voice of Labor: The Jewish Anarchists is a 1980 documentary film about the history of Jewish Anarchists in the United States. It was made by Steven Fischler and Joe Sucher through their independent production company Pacific Street Films. The film focuses on the Jewish Anarchist movement that arose from sweatshop workers in the United States, along with their lives as new immigrants back then and their then contemporary retirement.[1][2] The film's raison d'etre was the coverage of the closing of the Fraye Arbeter Shtime; the first and primary Jewish Anarchist newspaper in America, in 1977.[3] The film makes active use of the Yiddish language: with interviews, clips of historical movies, and songs in the language. The film features scenes from Uncle Moses (1932); a Yiddish Language film about the labour struggles within the Jewish community in America.[3]
Music
The film is noted for its use of music: collecting together various yiddish folk and political songs that interspersed around the film. This includes the first known arrangement of In Ale Gasn/Daloy Politsey as a combined song; combined into a single version still sung today by composer and arranger Zalmen Mlotek.[4] The tracklisting to the film's soundtrack is as follows:[3]
- Ellis island - Solomon Smulewitz
- Mein Rue Platz - Morris Rosenfeld
- Vahkt Oyf (awaken!) - Dovid Edelstadt
- Makhness Geyen (masses marching) - Milchel Gelbart
- In Ale Gas/Hey Hey Daloy Politsey (hey hey down with the police) - Folk Song
- A Grus Fun (regards from trenches) - Isodore Lillman
- Tsiganeshtl - Dave Tarras
