Tenacious D concert chronology |
The Spicy Meatball Tour is a concert tour by American comedy rock band Tenacious D[1] in support of the band's songs "The Spicy Meatball Song" and "Video Games".[2] The tour began on May 6, 2023 and is set to end on May 15, 2024 with the band playing in the United States and in Europe.[3]
This was the band's first tour since canceling the 2020 tour: "The Purple Nurple Tour... Twisting Hard to the Left!" due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The band also had a special performance, that is not recognized as part of the tour, at the The Game Awards 10-Year Celebration, a night of video game music at the Hollywood Bowl backed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.[4]
History
The tour set list was heavily influenced by the band's 2006 film, Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny and consisted of music from the band's first three albums (Tenacious D and The Pick of Destiny, Rize of the Fenix). Music from their fourth album was not part of the setlist.
The band's new song, "Video Games" premiered online ahead of the tour, on May 11, 2023 via a 3D animated music video directed by Adam Paloian and his production company Pinreel Inc., which was the band's first new music video since 2012.[5]
On June 1, 2023, the band released a music video for their cover version of Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game", a song the band started performing on this tour.[6]
Ahead of their show in Charlotte, North Carolina in September, Tenacious D revealed that Charlotte is where Jack Black and Kyle Gass took the first promotional photos for their first album.[7]
The band also released a coloring book, titled "Tenacious D: The Official Coloring Book" while on this tour. Lmited edition signed copies of the book where available on each stop of the second leg starting with the show in Charlotte, North Carolina.[8]
Opening acts
Musician Steel Beans and Acoustic duo Wynchester, composed of longtime Tenacious D guitarist John Konesky, alongside Kyle Gass Band vocalist, Mike Bray, opened for specific nights of the first leg of the tour. For the fall U.S. dates, comedian Dave Hill opened for the band.[9] For the European dates on the third leg, band Crusade and Dave Hill were the opening acts for specific nights. [10]
