The Utah Social Media Regulation Act is a bill signed by the Governor of Utah on March 23, 2023.[1] It states that all minors living in the state of Utah will have to have guardian permission to use social media between the times of 10:30 PM, and 6:30 AM (Mountain Daylight Time),[2][3] the bill is set to go into effect on March 1, 2024.[4]
History
The bill was signed on March 23, 2023, in response to the large epidemic of minors being tracked by companies and having social media platforms be addicting.[5] The bill states that tech companies will have until March 1, 2024 to comply, or they will be fined around US$2,500 for each violation.[6]
Controversies
Many people have stated that privacy for minors, mainly minors a part of the LGBTQ community, may be less available,[7] and many people don't think that the bill is enforceable since the law is based on cyber-usage, and since companies like TikTok aren't based in the United States, they can't enforce the regulation on those companies.[8][9]
