General elections were held in Liberia in May 1871. Former president Joseph Jenkins Roberts of the Republican Party was elected president unopposed.[1] The results of the election were not recognised by the incumbent president Edward James Roye of the True Whig Party, on the grounds that the 1870 Liberian constitutional referendum had extended the length of presidential terms to four years rather than two. The dispute over term length was a contributor to the 1871 Liberian coup d'état, which resulted in Roye's deposition and eventual death. Roberts ultimately took office as president on 1 January 1872.
