On 29 December 2023, a mass shooting occurred in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Mexico.[1][2]

Background

Ciudad Obregón is a city in Sonora in Northern Mexico which is badly affected by the Mexican drug war and has one of the world's highest murder rates.[1][2]

Shooting

During the early hours of 29 December 2023, three gunmen stormed a party in Ciudad Obregón.[1][3] A fourth gunman, already at the party, joined his three colleagues in committing the mass shooting.[1] Initial reports stated that they had killed six people and wounded 26 others before fleeing.[1][2] The victims included Leobardo Vega Arellano alias "El Wacho" or "El Soldado", a cartel member who was the main target of the attack, as well as two 14-year-old girls.[3] The death count rose to eight after two more victims died in a local hospital.[4]

On 30 December, Alfonso Durazo, the Governor of Sonora, held a press conference to announce that four suspects had been detained in connection to the shooting.[4]
