I Can See Your Voice franchise |
Ma näen su häält (English: I Can See Your Voice) is an Estonian television mystery music game show series based on the South Korean programme of the same name. Since its premiere on 27 February 2022,[1][2] it has aired three seasons on Kanal 2.
Gameplay
Format
Presented with a group of "mystery singers" identified only by their occupation, a guest artist and contestants must attempt to eliminate bad singers from the group without ever hearing them sing, assisted by clues and a celebrity panel over the course of several rounds. At the end of the game, the last remaining mystery singer is revealed as either good or bad by means of a duet between them and one of the guest artists.[lower-alpha 1]
Rewards
If the singer is good, the contestants win a cash prize (based on airing year of a single season, i.e. €2,022); if the singer is bad, the same amount is given to the bad singer instead.
Rounds
Visual round
- First impression (Estonian: Esimene mulje)
- The guest artist and contestants are given some time to observe and examine each mystery singer based on its appearance.[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 3][lower-alpha 4]
Lip sync round
- Moving the mouth (Estonian: Suu liigutamine)
- Each mystery singer performs a lip sync to a song. Good singers mime to a recording of their own performance, while bad singers mime to a recording by someone else.[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 3][lower-alpha 4]
Evidence round
- Home video (Estonian: Koduvideo)
- The guest artist and contestants are presented with a video package in which one of the mystery singers discusses their life and musical qualifications.[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 3][lower-alpha 4]
Interrogation round
- Cross-examination (Estonian: Ristküsitlus)
- The guest artist and contestants may ask questions to the remaining mystery singers. Good singers are required to give truthful responses, while the bad singers must lie.[lower-alpha 2][lower-alpha 3][lower-alpha 4]
Notes:
Background
Production and development
Following a joint agreement with CJ ENM and Fremantle for its development of the show in November 2020,[5][6] TV3 has initially made an interest to adapt I Can See Your Voice[7] as it follows the successful broadcasts of Maskis laulja.[8] Then in January 2022, Duo Media Networks formally acquired the rights to produce an Estonian counterpart of that show.[9] It is produced by Ruut; the staff team is managed by executive producer Triin Luhats, producer Kaupo Karelson, and director Anna Stepanova.[7][10]
Filming
Tapings for the programme took place at various locations (both from rival stations TV3 and ETV) such as Stuudio 3 in Lasnamäe, Tallinn (for the first and third seasons)[11][12] and Stuudio 4 in Kesklinn (for the second season).[13][14]
Broadcast history
Ma näen su häält debuted on 27 February 2022,[1][2] two weeks before TV3's rival show Maskis laulja premiered its third season on 13 March 2022.[15][16] After the first season finale, the series has been already renewed for a second season[17] that premiered on 18 September 2022.[18] As part of Kanal 2's 30th founding anniversary,[19] the third season[20] premiered on 17 September 2023.[19][21]
Special episodes and companion events
After the first season finale, it was followed by a postseason episode (subtitled Suurimad üllatused, English: The Biggest Surprises) on 22 May 2022.[22][23] Following the third season finale, an encore concert (subtitled Ma ei näinud su häält, English: I Didn't See Your Voice) featuring some of mystery singers and guest artists returning to perform one last time, was held on the last day of 2023.[24][25]
For the second season, two companion events were added — an in-game event Ma kuulen su häält (English: I Can Hear Your Voice) is conducted during the main programme, followed by a lead-out aftershow Ma nägin su häält (English: I Saw Your Voice).[26]
Cast
The series has a panel of celebrities who assist the guest artist(s) to decipher mystery singers' identities throughout the game. Alongside with mainstays, guest panelists also appear since the first season. Overall, 7 different members have been assigned, with the original lineup being Mart Juur, Estoni Kohver (of 5miinust), Grete Kuld, Evelin Võigemast, and Andrei Zevakin.
Beside them, subsequent members joining on that lineup also include Tõnis Niinemets (from second season).
